An evening of music and fun came to the concert hall in Nottingham on Monday.
Brought to life by the Entertainers production company, known for their touring shows such as ‘Magic of Motown,’ and ‘Lost in Music’ The evening promised a delightful festive twist on ABBA’s beloved tunes—and it absolutely delivered!
The stage was adorned with two tall Christmas trees that flanked a central screen displaying the show’s title amidst a flurry of twinkling snowflakes and the occasional Santa Claus, setting the scene for a night that beautifully blended the joy of Christmas with the timeless charm of ABBA’s music. The performers, donning Santa hats and sparkling costumes added to the festive merriment.
While ABBA may not have an extensive catalogue of Christmas hits, the production cleverly infused the holiday spirit into the show. The evening kicked off with some of the classic ABBA numbers. Four performers took on the roles of the four-piece Swedish super group, looking and sounding like the ABBA we know and love. Their two talented backing singers then took over to perform beloved non-ABBA Christmas classics like “Merry Christmas Everyone” and “Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.” Their lively renditions set the perfect tone perfectly for the remainder of the evening, inviting the audience to fully embrace the festive cheer.
Our ‘Agnetha’ showcased her fabulous vocals with ‘The Winner Takes it All’, whilst our ‘Anti-Frid’ transformed into Cher adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening. She delivered her rendition of “Fernando” from the ‘Mamma Mia 2’ soundtrack. Her vocal impression and charismatic stage presence perfectly complemented the festive spirit of the night.
In the second act, the ABBA members charmed the crowd with a delightful rendition of “All I Want for Christmas.” showcasing their versatility and adding a twist to the performance.
The nine-piece band, including the four ABBA members, two backing singers, and musicians, gave a great performance. Maintaining Swedish accents and referring to each other by their ABBA names throughout.
The evening was a whirlwind of ABBA hits, peppered with light-hearted comedy that had the audience laughing and clapping along, and up on their feet, singing and dancing throughout.
Not your run of the mill ABBA tribute night, but whether you’re a lifelong ABBA fan or just getting in the festive spirit, you’ll love ABBA-Merry Christmas.
