Cameron Mackintosh shows, always seem to have sufficient budget plus the appropriate experience to put on a spectacularly staged and high quality theatre. This colourful dynamic show is no exception!
Brian Conley, as Barnum is perfect casting with his winning smile, he is brilliantly supported by Linzi Hateley, as his wife Chairy. Conley works an audience with his ‘humbug’, as the ringmaster/showman that he is playing with such warmth and charisma it’s impossible not to love him. The obvious chemistry between Barnum and his wife is wonderfully reflected by Conley and Linzi Hateley.
Whenever they have a dispute about which path Barnum’s career should take next, he and Chairy always agree to let the ‘’fates’’ decide. Strangely the toss of a coin always comes down ‘heads’ and the decision is made.
Their marriage is not always rosy. We see Barnum walking the tightrope. To the gasps from a relieved audience, he makes it to the other side into the arms of the other woman, the songstress Jeni Lind. The colourful life that Barnum craved and tirelessly worked for during this period of his life was not to continue and he makes his way back to a more black and white life, that of a politician with his wife Chairy .
Although the show may be a circus spectacular, with the usual juggling, aerial work and acrobatics; the story of Barnum and his strong, forgiving, loving wife Chairy provides the emotional depth, which give the show its heart.
The finale shows off all the skills of the talented cast and is a vibrant memorable conclusion.
