There seems to be a few ‘foodboxs’ available at the moment. We reviewed the Degustabox a few weeks back. Now meet the food box for real foodies – The Food Discovery Box.
Food Discovery Box claim to ‘Scour the land from Lands End to John O’Groats to bring you…ultimate food finds’. We were impressed with the unique selection, many of which come from smaller independent producers, which you won’t find in the supermarket, unlike the Degustabox which contained goods from larger known brands.
Everything about the box screams quality. It arrives in a brown labelled box, within which is a sturdy white box with magnetic closing. Ah I’d have loved that as a kid to keep my treasures in. I contemplated keeping it now as its such good quality. The contents are securely packed, nestled within strips of brown paper.
The way it works is this…Your box is unique to you. You can choose from a single Discovery Box for £25.50, a monthly subscription from £23.50 per month or even a gift voucher ranging from £23.50 – £250. Once you’ve decided on your box, all you have to do is choose the flavours and tastes which excite you and complement your kitchen from 20-30 different gourmet food products from British producers.
Our box was complimentary so NottinghamLIVE could sample the range of products available. So, what did we get?
Mdtea – Chrysler Breakfast tea described as a gutsy blend of premium quality Indian Assam and Sri Lankan UVA teas. In a brown resealable bag the product looks quality. The bags themselves remind me of something from a wedding. Little white silky bags. These babies aren’t going to split and produced a rich strong brew.
Kenyan Blue Mountain All Day Drinking Medium Bodied Coffee. Similar packaging to the tea but not resealable. Love the fact that this is made locally by Stewarts of Trent Bridge. Honestly, I’ve not tried it yet, thing is you need a cafetière and I’ve no idea what I did with mine. Good job the packaging has the date its roasted on the back.
Olivebranch Chunky Tapenade – Kalamata Olives with Fig & Mint. Quite earthy, the mint is very subtle but was lovely with some thick crusty bread. Hand crafted product using classic Greek ingredients. The producers make their own olive oil on their family farm in Crete.
Chilli Ginger Chutney – Wow, this is one fiery mother. Don’t be deceived. Initially on the tongue you get the sweetness of the apple then BANG the heat kicks in and takes no prisoners. Lovely addition to a ploughman’s. It looks very homemade, as does the label, which is nice. From Charlie’s Country Garden in Sheffield.
Garlic Mayonnaise from The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight. Smooth thick smooth & creamy mayonnaise with a tangy garlic hit. Lovely. www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk
Chipotle Rub from Spicentice. A blend of herbs and spices for Mexican inspired dishes. Serving suggestions on the inside. Tasty rub for steaks or roast vegetables before barbecuing. Add to soups, sauces, stir fries or casseroles Gluten Free, no additives, no preservatives, no colouring, no waste. It’s the little tub that keeps giving. Made in Leicester www.spicentice.com.
