The sun was shining (mostly!) for this years Nottinghamshire County Show when I visited the prestigious event last Saturday.

Whilst I didn’t see Froojamaflip, the 8ft stilted character (how did I miss him??) or his friend Fred who were there to create an interactive experience about the importance of healthy living and eco-friendly gardening with families and children, I’ve got to admit, I did spend most of my time in the food area.

The popular county show on May 12 and 13 at Newark Showground, welcomed thousands of visitors again this year to experience adrenaline-packed horse-back displays and see lots of wonderful farmyard animals up close and personal.

As press I was invited into the members area at the ringside where we could watch the displays in comfort, which was handy as it did get drizzly towards the end of the day.

My favourite part though was the food experience. I love food demos and it was great to catch up with old friends, local butcher Johnny Pusztai and Prue Leith’s Northern Outreach trainer Andrea Wallace. Johnny did a butchery demo and his famous burger challenge.  There were also demonstrations throughout the day from Ladies in Pigs and Cathy’s Chocolates.

Radio Nottingham gardener and Horticulture expert John Stirland was a key speaker in the food experience area and advised visitors on how to grow their own vegetables, as well as answering Q&As from the crowd relating to gardening, vegetable growing, soil preparation and pest and disease control.

The importance of a healthy diet was demonstrated by home economist Teresa Bovey who showed how busy people can make delicious, healthy meals with minimum effort.

There was also a host of demonstrations from producers and industry experts in the food experience area, including another old friend, the lovely Linda Hewett who I have worked with at previous food festivals.  I’m also looking forward to meeting up with her next month to learn about bread making and the stress relief from making the dough ( I hope she’s got plenty!), Linda was running the children’s area and teaching children how to make vegetable soup, which I tried and was delicious. Another friend, local healthy food warrior Eva Humphreys was also giving advice.

Of course, I couldn’t go away empty-handed. More than 100 local producers, traders, and food specialists attended the show. I eame away with some artisan chocolate, rhubarb liquor to put in my prosecco and  a cake almost the size of my head to name a few bits(I’m such a girl!)

So, did you go to this years show?  I’d love to hear what your favourite bits were.
