The life of a food writer is an interesting job!
Quite often you’re a season ahead, so for example you’re writing about or tasting Christmas food in Summer, as was the case with the Bierkeller Christmas menu launch last week. So it was a pleasant surprise when I was invited to The Bierkeller again this week, but this time to sample their Summer cocktail menu.
For those not familiar with the Bierkeller (firstly, why not?) it is situated on Friar Lane in the building which used to house the Walkabout Bar. The Bierkeller is on three levels. You enter in the Around the World Bar, which has been designed to give a dynamic and quirky atmosphere. Upstairs is Shooters Bar, a sporting venue designed to maximise the opportunity to play games as well as watching on the big screen. Downstairs is the actual Bierkeller, an authentic Bavarian Bierkeller. German beers are served in two pint steins, by waitresses in classic Bavarian dress. Long bench seating great decor and, at the weekend, live entertainment from our Oompah bands make it a great social venue.
A Cocktail Masterclass was thrown in for us in the Around the World Bar. along with numerous canapés including a twist on the old sausage on a stick as we were treated to Bratwurst sandwiched between bread roll with mustard and tomato ketchup, mini burgers, meatballs in tomato sauce plus sticks of olive, feta and tomato
The evening was perfectly hosted by Paul Knowles of PK Agency, who was charming company.
The Around the World Bar wasn’t the first place I would have thought to go to for a Cocktail in the city, but it’s definitely now on my go to list.
