A couple of weeks ago I was invited along to Filthy’s bar to sample a few bits from their new menu. They’ve gone for an American diner style selection focusing on quick and easy snacks. Burgers/sliders, hot dogs, wings, that kind of thing. Which I think is great for the type of venue Filthy’s is. They have regular great live music, and great beer/ale choice, and now a great selection of snack food to enjoy with the aforementioned.
First off we were presented with the slider version of the ‘Le Bun’. The classic burger. Using locally sourced beef, it was juicy and flavoursome. The sliders are a great size and you could easily put three away without feeling full, but still filling a hole. Along with these we were served some ‘Mac ‘n’ Cheese balls’. They looked like scotch eggs, but, as the name would suggest, are filled with mac ‘n’ cheese. The odd thing about being served these at a new menu tasting is they’re not actually going to be on the new menu, which is a real shame. They went down a real treat as not many people had tried them before. We were told they may be offered as an occasional special, though.
Next up were the wings and strips. I’m a massive fan of wings, and I can honestly say these were some of the nicest I’ve ever had, but, again, not something that is served as an individual dish on the menu, on as part of a basked or platter. The real star of the evening were the ‘Dhaba sliders’. Onion bhaji patties with deep fried curried halloumi and a mint raita dressing. Everybody was impressed with this vegetarian option. The tastebuds tricked into thinking you were eating and Indian starter, but your eyes telling your you’re eating a burger. A culinary illusion.
All in all, the food was tasty, and I’d definitely like to try some more bits off the menu; like the chilli cheeseburger, or the American pancakes from the dessert menu. Get yourself down to Filthy’s and soak up the atmosphere whilst knocking back a pint or sipping on a cocktail, enjoying a live band or some chilled background music, and nibbling on a slider or wing or two (save me one!).
