The combination of Street food, healthy eating and convenience is one of the hottest food trends of 2015.

With the likes of both Mexican and South American Cuisine dominating the foodie world, NottinghamLIVE were excited to get creative and put our burrito wrapping skills to the test when we were invited by Barburrito for a Mexican Master class here at their branch on King Street in Nottingham.

The evening was hosted by Blain, our master class queen and whilst we waited for the other local bloggers to arrive, we were handed a bucket of cold Mexican beers to get the party started.

We kicked off with a brief history about Morgan and Paul, the ‘Mexperts’. After many years of holding a burning passion for creativity, they decided to share their love of Mexican food and open their first Barburrito in Manchester.   The guys now have over 10 burrito bars in the UK and are rapidly expanding.  Their concept of fresh, fun and inspired  food is obvious in everything they demonstrate, from the marketing down to the menu choice.

Blain allowed us to sample everything on the menu. As you can see from the photo, we were really spoilt for choice. Each taster had a detailed list of fresh ingredients but a simple preparation and cooking method. We loved the fact that you can choose how your steak is cooked and that they use chicken thighs instead of breast because they hold more flavour, oh and most importantly their guacamole is made fresh each day! The best guacamole we’ve ever tasted!

After over 18 samples (yes, 18!) it was time to limber up and perfect  the wrapping of the burrito. How hard can it be? Top tip: We learnt very fast not to overfill unless you want all your hard work to go to pieces! After 4 attempts and our favourite flavour combinations buzzing through our head, we were ready for the big finale!

If you’re new to Barburrito, just follow the 3 main steps:

Step 1: Choose your dish. Whether you decide on nachos, tacos, burrito or want to be extra healthy and go for a bowl, this is the base so it’s important to choose wisely. Included in all dishes is your choice of rice, beans, onions and peppers, meat & cheese or sour cream. For us it was a close call between the coriander and lime basmati rice (very refreshing!) and the healthier alternative of brown rice with cumin & chilli.

Next were the pinto beans. These are cooked and simmered slowly for up to 2 hours with tomatoes, cumin and chilli to release all the tasty flavours. We were ecstatic when we got the choice of garlic mushrooms as our vegetable option.

Step 2: The meat. This was such a tough decision….We chose steak and chicken with a big blob of guacamole. Pure heaven, especially knowing it’s been marinated for at least 24 hours.

Step 3: The salsa! We were brave and tried all the salsa’s, let’s just say we stuck with the medium option. The crazy smokey hot habanero salsa isn’t for the faint hearted. We even got to try their limited addition slaw. A healthy alternative to coleslaw using carrot, red cabbage and lime juice. Very refreshing and took the layers of textures to another level.

We can see why working professionals come here to grab a healthy dinner after a long day at the office; something I noticed frequently during the class. With prices between £6.30 – £7.10 whether you eat in or take away plus the option to have 4 of your ‘5 a day’ in just one meal it is certainly appealing.

We’re already planning our next combination sensation!
