Curiouser and curiouser grows the menu at the Wonderland Cafe on Station Street. The venue, the brain child of Nottingham entrepreneur Ash Hudson, is set to launch its new weird and wonderful Toastie menu soon, and I was invited along to be one of the first to sample the latest creations in dining.
The success of the hidden cafe has continued to grow since originally opening as a pop-up back in December, and due to popularity, the Alice in Wonderland themed cafe is now staying open for the foreseeable future, with it comes big plans.
Never one to sit on a dream, Ash from Beeston is soon to be launching a crowd funding campaign to make more changes to the magical eatery, these will include a disabled and child friendly toilet facility, new bar area and late night opening, to name a few of the improvements.
The new additions to the menu are the first of the changes. As you would expect from a menu entitled ‘Eat Me’ which already boasts delights such as Toad Down the Hole, Mad Sandwiches and Scone of Hearts, these are no ordinary warm sandwiches. Along with his sous chef, Scott Tutin, Ash has created a series of toasties with a twist.
The range follows their original idea of an all day breakfast in a toastie, which will feature on the new menu. Sausage, bacon and the works; all sealed within the hot sandwich. From this they have gone on to develop toastie options of bangers and mash, fish and chips, salmon and spinach, corned beef hash, meaty, a vegan option and even Sunday lunch in a toastie; which includes a whole Yorkshire pudding, meat, gravy and peas. The novel ideas are not only deliciously tasty, but using freshly prepared ingredients, they are guaranteed to satisfy even the biggest hunger pangs. Prices range from £3.95 to £5.95
“My thought was, I need something English to fit the theme of Alice in Wonderland, but be quick, tasty and creative” says Ash
Attention to detail is paramount to Ash, who can often be found in the cafe dressed as the MadHatter, alongside Alice, who will serve you your sarnies. The coffee is from the same suppliers as the world famous Betty’s Tearooms in Harrogate, the brownies from local company; Beeston Brownies. Paintings of toadstools and weird and wonderful plants decorate and adorn the walls, all the handy work of a Nottingham Graffiti artist in order to make your visit a true fairy-tale experience.
The kickstarter campaign is going live on Wednesday 15th March.2017 from when you will be able to get more details by visiting: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/wonderlandbarlounge
