We arrive at the restaurant just before our booked time of 8pm. A shack-like creation in the refurbished Vic Centre, the restaurant kind of looks a little like the centre did mid job. Industrial meets beach hut seems to be the theme
We are greeted at reception by a happy girl, in fact she seems far too happy to see us – maybe she was expecting someone else. ‘Sawasdee Ka’ she smiles and takes us to our table. A nice little table, well stocked with condiments and a great view over the escalators. What more could you want from Thailand. In fact throughout the time we’re there, the waitresses, and we’re served by many, never fail to not add ‘ Kop Khun Krub’ to the end of each sentence, like little enthusiastic wind up dolls.
Once seated we are given a drink menu. Our orders are promptly taken and the drinks are on our table at 8.06pm. The starters are on the table at 8.08pm – speedy fast service – almost too fast really as you feel they might have been sitting around waiting to be delivered that quick. The Gai Satay chicken, or chicken lollipops as I like to call them, are nice but the chicken doesn’t taste like good quality chicken. The accompanying sauce is great and full of flavour so they get away with it. My companion has the Por Pia Sod, good name for a prawn rice parcel roll, they’re OK but a little bland.
Our plates are quickly cleared and Nook, our current waitress, brings over the main courses, it’s still only 8.27pm. If you’ve argued and want the night to be over quickly, this is the place to go. The mains are well presented. My companion has the Gai Yang, half grilled chicken, accompanied by pork scratchings and noodles it arrives on a huge plate. I have the Pla Pao: the marinated sea bass, mines passable but it doesn’t come with much, so despite ordering from the same section of the menu, I finish well before my companion. My dish was nice but my companion struggled to get the meat off the chicken – there was a lot of bone, the end result looks a bit road kill!
Whilst waiting for them to finish I have a wander round the restaurant and investigate the quirky loos.
The restaurant is well presented and clean and has a good atmosphere. Overall the evening is ok but over very quickly. If I wanted a proper evening out I probably wouldn’t go here, for the cost of the meal I could have better quality food and a more laid back experience. Only 53 minutes after entering I’m £54 lighter and on my way out, Kop Khun Krub for the privilege.
