This Sunday sees the return of the excellent LOAD OF MEAT FEST, a regular gig from our buddies at IKE Productions. Taking place at The Maze LoMF features not only three stages of great live music but also a free BBQ – check out this weeks Looking Ahead for more information. As ever the line up for this weeks show is a cracker and among the great acts playing will be CUT THE HEROICS. We decided to speak to the band ahead of the gig to find out more about them.
Hi guys, first up could you introduce yourselves to our readers?
Yeah, we are Cut the Heroics, Joe, Kieran and Stephen.
Could you give us a bit of background on the band and how you got started?
Kieran and Joe are brothers and we live on the same street so have known each other for most of our lives. Before settling as we are we pretty much messed about as any young band does and we gigged under the CTH name for around 4 years, but we started taking it a bit more seriously and been in this line up for the past 2 and a half years.
Do you remember your first gig and what it was like the first time you stepped on stage?
Our first gig together as a 3 piece was on a slot at Oxjam in Mansfield. Our first time on stage must have been years ago, too long ago for us to remember, but even now we still get a little nervous.
What would you say are your biggest influences, as a band and individually?
It’d be hard to decide on influences as a band as we all bring our own individual influences into it, to create a weird punk-pop-rock sound.
Joe’s faves are Motion City Soundtrack, Stephen’s; Brawlers and Mad Capsule Markets and Kieran’s are Blink-182 and Dream Theatre.
Where did the name Cut the Heroics originate?
there were a few different names before we had settled. It came about from a play on title of a video game called ‘ No More Heroes’.
What have been your most memorable gigs to date?
Recently we had an amazing show supporting our pals Lacey at Rock City, the audience was great and the atmosphere was electric!
You’re playing at the Load of Meat Fest this Sunday at The Maze, you must be looking forward to that?
Yeah, we’ve worked with the organiser before and they did a really good job and we jumped at the chance to work with them again.
What can those that go along expect from your set?
An energy, noise and sweat filled 30 minutes. We have a good bunch of high energy tunes and one a or two that have a slower pace but every song hits hard.
Along with great live music the event features a free BBQ, which we thing is ace, what is your favourite BBQ food?
We all love a good burnt sausage at a BBQ…
It’s a great line up for the show, is there anyone in particular you’re looking forward to checking out?
We are really looking forward to catching Castaway as their EP we thought was brilliant. The Spangle Corp are always fun to watch and our pals in Requin Blanc are a good bunch of guys.
The Nottingham music scene seems to be really strong at the moment, it must be exciting to be a part of it?
It’s amazing seeing so many cool bands go further and further and it is exciting being part of that experience.
What do you think is the reason behind the rise of the scene in Nottingham?
There has been some amazing break through acts from Nottingham like Jake Bugg and Saint Raymond, so I think people really want start getting involved with it all and be apart of something from the ground up so to speak.
Who are your favourite fellow Nottingham acts at the present?
We really dig Lacey at the minute, as above Castaway’s EP is awesome and The Spangle Corp have an album coming out we are looking forward too. But Nottingham is full brilliant bands.
What’s up next for the band, after the show on Sunday?
We have another show coming up in February, and we are also looking to book shows outside of Nottingham too.
When you’re not on stage how do you like to relax, any favourite Nottingham hangouts?
Recently we took up rock climbing, but usually we get together at anywhere where there is good food and good beer, so lots to choose from in Nottingham.
Finally, anything else you’d like to say to the readers of NottinghamLIVE?
Just thanks for reading and for checking us out, give us a like on our Facebook page, come say hi at a show take a listen to our CD on bandcamp, but most of all, be excellent to each other.
