NottinghamLIVE speaks to I’m Not From London’s Kim Winter about her upcoming event Cover from Another Brother.
Hi Kim, how’s things?
Good thanks! I’m bloody busy at the minute with events for Under The Tree & I’m Not From London so I’m currently answering your questions whilst working a door shift at The Maze!
Can you tell us the general idea around Cover from Another Brother?
It’s basically some of my favourite musicians from Nottingham thrown together for one night at The Golden Fleece, covering each other’s songs or a song by any Nottingham musician/band. The more unique and weirder the better; the arrangement is totally in their hands! Everyone will also be doing one or two of their own as well of course!
Where did the idea originate from?
I’d had far too many rums one night in The Golden Fleece! I was going on about getting everyone together for a gig near Christmas but the rest is a bit hazy. I woke up in the morning with a memo in my phone that vaguely made sense, ran it by a couple of people who insisted it had to happened and decided to run with it. Apparently I have some good ideas when I’m wasted.
How big a job was it organising the line-up and who covers who?
It’s been a bit mental I won’t lie; a lot of people wanted to be involved the minute I posted about it and the one thing I was worried about is twenty covers of Lightening Bolt! But most people knew instantly the song they wanted which was great because more than anything it just proves how many great musicians we have in Nottingham and much everyone admires each other’s work. This is probably the most artists I’ve worked with during such a short space of time; 3 hours and 20 acts is going to be a challenge! I’m shitting myself a bit about the logistics on the night if I’m honest!
Who do you have lined up for the show?
Frazer Lowrie, Sam Jones, Heavy Heads, Alexa Hawksworth, Anwyn Williams, Jamie Moon, Josh Wheatley, Chris Turner, Ether Van Leuven … The list almost seems never ending! There’s twenty musicians involved (unless I I crazy and squeeze some more in) and they’re pretty much the ones I’ve booked a lot this year for Under The Tree/I’m Not From London which is nice. We’re kind of treating it as a musicians Christmas party which I like.
Any covers that might well surprise us?
I’m looking forward to Frazer Lowrie, Josh Kemp and Frankie Rudolph quite a lot because I’m interested to see how they’re going to change the arrangements. Everyone is being fairly secretive about their song choice so I don’t want to ruin anything! But so far none have filled me with dread and fear which is good.
Is it true that you plan on doing a cover of a track by one of your favourite Nottingham artists?
Well I haven’t rehearsed it yet and god knows how it’s going to sound but yes, that’s the plan. It was a drunken promise that I’ve somehow ended up following through on! But it is honestly such a brilliant song and I couldn’t deal with the fact that it might not be sung on the night, even if that does mean me having to murder it. Ha but in all seriousness, I hope I don’t destroy it because I really love the song.
All being well is there a thought that maybe this could develop into an annual festive event?
Definitely. Obviously if people enjoy the concept then I’d love to do another one because I think it’s a great way of getting everyone together. I’ve thought about something in the summer if things go well on Thursday and having it twice a year because there’s always new talent emerging and new faces which means new great songs.
For those considering coming down how would you sell it to them?
A taste of some of the most talented musicians in Nottingham getting drunk together, showing how much they love each other’s music and making nice sounds for your ears. And it’s bloody free so why wouldn’t you want to see twenty talented singers in one night?
What other events are you working on at the moment?
Under The Christmas Tree on the 19th December at The Bodega is the next big event I’ve got planned. Loads of I’m Not From London events; I’m so excited about ‘I’m Not From London/Farmyard & Friends’ on the 22nd at The Golden Fleece. The Under The Tree podcast which is everyone we love crammed into an hours listening! 2014 is shaping up to be insane already and summer is going to be an exciting time. I’m also sort of in talks to bring a new night/platform for acoustic musicians which is exciting but that’s basically all I can say on that without getting into trouble!
Finally anything else you’d like to say to NottinghamLIVE’s readers?
Listen to local music and visit local venues as much as you can; we have an amazing scene so don’t let it go to waste! And if you’re a musician then get on touch and drop me a line.
