Let the Beacon Shine

If you were listening to the NottinghamLIVE Radio Show last night, and if you were not you should have been, you will know all about Let the Beacon Shine thanks to our guest Robert Howie Smith.

However, if, for some inexplicable reason, you didn’t hear last night’s show here is a brief overview of the campaign, and how you can help.

Let the Beacon Shine is a collaboration between the Howie Smith Project and The St Anns Project to restore the old Beacon pub on Bluebell Hill in St Anns, making it available for the local community to use for a variety of creative projects.

While the new owner of the property, which has sat empty, deteriorating and, often, vandalised, for several years, has long term plans for the property and land he has agreed to make the building available for the short term offering an excellent opportunity to the local community.

To help with the campaign the group have launched a Kickstar project in order to raise funds to aid with the restoration of the building making it a safe, secure building. For those not in the know Kickstarter is one of the main websites for something call crowdfunding. The idea being that individuals (or businesses) can back projects they deem worthy and in doing so earn rewards dependent upon the amount they choose to donate. The caveat, those seeking funding have to set a funding target and they have to reach said target in order to receive the money. It’s all or nothing.

For the Beacon Project the target to raise is a rather hefty £6,300 and, at the time of writing, they have raised £425. With 15 days remaining there is certainly a long way to go to ensure the funding for this hugely worthwhile project is raised.

That said even if the Kickstarter campaign proves unsuccessful, and Robert assures us he has a few plans up his sleeve to encourage donations, that won’t be the end of the project with all involved determined to ensure that, no matter what, something happens at the venue.

We’re going to be keeping an eye on this and we’ll have all the information as and when we here it on the progress of the campaign. You can also find out more when Robert returns to Trent Sound, this Saturday, as a guest host on Nottingham LACE with Jason Loftus – only on trentsound.com
