Looking Ahead: Gigs of the week – 10 – 16 November 2014

So Bonfire weekend is now behind us, not that you’d think it with all the fireworks still going off at night, however the music scene in Nottingham is still firing on all cylinders and there are plenty of fantastic gigs to check out over the next seven days.

So here’s our picks for the coming days.

No Honour, The Winter Hill Syndicate, Famous For Nothing, Harthill – Rescue Rooms – Tuesday 11 November

Let’s face it, Tuesday is one of those terrible days in the week where the joys off the last weekend are long in the past while the fun of the coming one seem far off, however the good folks at IKE Productions have seen fit to offer up this tasty looking gig to help boost your Tuesday.

This show promises to get noisy so any early week blues will be smashed away in a cacophony of guitars and drums, which, let’s face it, sounds great.

Topping the bill will be Mansfield based melodic metalcore act NO HONOUR, plus some top class metal noise from local favourites THE WINTER HILL SYNDICATE, metalcore band FAMOUS FOR NOTHING and, kicking it all off, Mansfield act HARTHILL.

Tickets for this are £6 in advance and it’s doors at 6.30pm.

Hush #7 – The Maze – Wednesday 12 November

The Maze’s popular, chilled out acoustic night returns this Wednesday. At Hush the aim is to celebrate the plethora of great singer-songwriter talent in this city and to do so in a quiet, relaxing and respectful environment. As ever the good folks at the ace Mansfield Road venue have lined up a cracking selection of performers for your midweek enjoyment.

Kicking things off will be JACK CROSS, guitarist for indie guys No!Disco, who recently played the NottinghamLIVE stage at the Hockley Hustle. Jack will be performing some of his solo material this Wednesday in what promises to be quite a change from his usual band work.

Jamie Moon

Jamie Moon

A huge Nottingham favourite, and the last ever live guest on the NottinghamLIVE Radio Show (at least as memory serves), JAMIE MOON is one of the most enjoyable performers on the Nottingham circuit. Having recently supported Gallery 47 at the Contemporary, as well as releasing his EP, it’s been a pretty cool year for Jamie and you can see why on Wednesday.

Despite being just 15 years old IAMSTARZ has established herself as one of the best new talents on the Nottingham scene with her fantastic atmospheric indie sound proving a real winner and setting this hugely talented singer-songwriter and pianist up for a big future.

Derbyshire based 18 year old indie performer PAIGE SEABRIDGE will also be performing before alt-folk/cafe culture band ALTA PUEBLO wrap things up.

As ever The Maze are charging the bargain price of just £3 for this show, which kicks off at 7.30pm, so be sure to get on down.

Under the Tree – Malt Cross – Thursday 13 November

After a four month closure, during which time the venue went through a huge restoration project, the much loved Malt Cross is now back open and looking better than ever, and so it’s no surprise that the Under the Tree team have opted to head back to the former music hall for a night of live music.

As ever the combination of Under the Tree and the Malt Cross leads to a night of wonderful music and the line up this week promises just that.

Starting things off will be a new face on the Nottingham scene, making her Under the Tree show bow, folk singer HANNAH CLAPHAM.

An older favourite will be up next in the form of Manchester born, Nottingham based MATT MCAULIFFE, followed by RICHARD JENKINS.

You can expect some great bluegrass and americana sounds from MO MORRIS followed by an appearance from a NottinghamLIVE, and Under the Tree, favourite, ANWYN WILLIAMS before Lincoln singer-songwriter RICHARD FENWICK rounds off the night.

If you haven’t had chance to check out the newly refurbished Malt Cross this is the perfect opportunity to do so while enjoying some fantastic live music – and, as ever, it’s free entry.

The names of the Nottingham performers who will be collaborating with Natalie are being kept under wraps for now, though there are certain names being banded about, if you want to know for sure you’ll have to make sure you’re there.

What is more Natalie will be supported on the evening by the remarkable GALLERY 47 who himself recently played a sensational show at the very same venue.

Orangefest – The Orange Tree – Saturday 15 November

This Saturday sees the return of The Orange Tree’s annual free music festival, Orangefest, which is, once again, curated by the good folks at I’m Not From London.

You can expect vintage clothing stalls, record stalls, cakes, creative wares, even a Tarot card reader.

And, of course, fantastic live music.

Headlining this years festival will be the excellent and always fun DEAF BRIDGES, featuring members of the now, sadly, defunct Hot Japanese Girl and, thankfully, still going Practical Lovers, these guys are one of the most entertaining bands in the city and the ideal way to end the party on Saturday night. Let’s be honest, it’s impossible not to love a band with a track called ‘Hogan Knows Best’.

Joining the Deaf Bridges folks will be BIG RHINO, DESERT MOUNTAIN TRIBE, HOUSE OF THIEVES, THE DAMN HEAVY, THREE GIRL RHUMBA, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, CITY OF KITES, ANWYN WILLIAMS.

PRETENDING PEOPLE THEATRE, a professional theatre company, will be starting the day off with songs from their latest show ‘Memory Lane’.

Orangefest kicks off at 1pm and, as we said before, it’s free entry.

So that wraps up this weeks selection and we think you’ll agree it’s a cracker.

We’ll be back next week more great gigs to check out, in the meantime let us know of any you think we should shine a spotlight on, and continue supporting Nottingham’s brilliant music scene.
