So here we are, the last week of August, the parents among us are looking forward to sending the kids back to school and, of course, it’s the last Bank Holiday until Christmas. As ever there is plenty to enjoy when it comes to Nottingham’s fantastic music scene – so here are our picks of the coming week.
Bank Holiday Music – Cast Bar – Monday 25 August
Nottingham Playhouse’s Cast Bar will be hosting an afternoon of music this Bank Holiday Monday, the weather might not be shaping up to great but the music will take your mind off that – and you can grab a nice bite to eat and drink while you’re at it. Performing at the venue will be half of 94 GUNSHIPS, PHOEBE BALL, ISSAKA, JAMIE MOON and LEAH SINEAD, a fantastic selection of Nottingham acoustic talent if ever we saw it. With the Cast barbecue on hand for fantastic burgers we can’t think of a better way to spend your bank holiday.

People’s March for the NHS – Forest Recreation Ground – Thursday 28 August
This week hundreds of walkers will recreate the route of the famous Jarrow March against Unemployment and poverty of 1936. This time they’re doing so in protest at the governments underhanded selling off of one of the country’s proudest and most vital institutions – the NHS.
The Nottinghamshire leg of the March will see marchers start at Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield at 10am on Thursday, they’ll then walk through Sutton, Kirkby and Annesley before stopping for lunch in Hucknall at 1pm. The walk will then continue through Hucknall and Bulwell on to Nottingham where a welcoming rally will great them at the Forest Recreation Ground at 5.30pm.
The event will see live performances from Kelly’s Heroes, Breakfast Club, Corndodgers and DIY Poets.
There will also be talks by Lisa Clarke (No More Page 3), Lilian Greenwood MP, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Jackie Morris and Ursula Holdsworth (Keep our NHS public).

Josh Wheatley – The Bodega – Friday 29 August
A perennial NottinghamLIVE favourite Josh has had a pretty damn good 2014 to date, including playing Rock City as part of the Future Sound of Nottingham final, now he’ll be taking to the stage at The Bodega along with his new band for what, we believe at least, is his biggest headline show to date.
Featuring new songs as well as old favourites this promises to be a great night and what’s more Josh will be joined by some great fellow Nottingham performers in the shape of FIELD STUDIES, FRANKIE RUDOLF and TOM ASH.
Tickets are just a fiver in advance and are available from Alt-Tickets.

Writer’s Block present: A Hip-Hop Fundraiser for Palestine – The Maze – Friday 29 August
If you’ve been paying any attention to the current goings on in the Middle East you will have been sure to notice the horrific suffering of the people of Gaza in the face of Isreal’s attacks on the occupied lands. The folks at Writer’s Bloc are as moved by this as the rest of us and have decided to get together a selection of great Hip-Hop talent for a night of fundraising. All of the proceeds will be donated to MaP (Medical aid for Palestine).
Established in 1984 MaP work for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees and will use your donations to support the medical and health needs of the people of Palestine.
As well as helping a great cause you’ll also be able to enjoy a fantastic night of live music with performances from 1ST BLOOD, MR SWITCH, CAN B & K-DEUCE, ELJAY & KRYPTIK and JAMIE GARTON.
Tickets are just £3 and it kicks off at 10pm.

Gallery 47 – Nottingham Contemporary – Saturday 30 August
Anybody who follows the Nottingham scene will be familiar with Gallery 47 – aka the hugely talented Jack Peachey. One of the city’s best singer-songwriter Jack is back having signed a deal with local legends I’m Not From London for his brand new album ‘All Will be Well” which is set for release in September.
This gig will mark the release of his brand new single ‘Invasion’ which was released on Monday 25.
Personally we can’t think of a better combination than Gallery 47 and the wonderful Nottingham Contemporary and we’re sure this will be a gig not to be missed.
What’s more Jack will be supported by two great Nottingham acts in the form of JAMIE MOON and HEARTS.
Doors open at 8pm and the music starts at 9.
