‘Plastic Mermaids, from the Isle of Wight, have steadily built a rare and glittering world that stretches far beyond their island vistas, one that’s gravitational pull is irresistible.’LONDON IN STEREO
“Plastic Mermaids have just shared their new track “1996” and it’s fan-bloody-tastic: vibrant, psychedelic and packed full of dizzying, ingenious touches on the production.” THE INDEPENDENT
“If you close your eyes, “Floating in a Vacuum” makes you feel like you’re gazing far beyond the planetarium dome and into space itself. It’s a kind of heavenly body with a twinkling sense of wonderment and uncanny vocals that sound at once familiar, yet distinctly alien.” THE LINE OF BEST FIT
“Channelling The Flaming Lips, the woozy, otherwordly rocker “Floating in a Vacuum” is full of cinematic, orchestral tones and shiny superb production.” CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND
“Psychedelic in that neat, amateurish, deeply English sense, the group take hold of every aspect of their sound, right down to the effects they use.” CLASH
Plastic Mermaids have just revealed a third single, ‘I Still Like Kelis,’ taken from their self-produced and one of the most genuinely original and sonically adventurous debut albums you’ll hear all year, ‘Suddenly Everyone Explodes,’ released on May 24th 2019.
New single ‘I Still like Kelis’ is a hazy indie-pop gem featuring crunchy guitars and distorted synths, which vocalist Doug Richards describes as being about, “Two people who used to hang out and now are in different places. In the lyrics of the second verse I sing, “But in a microscopic way we’re tangled up eternally, I’ll spin the same as you.” This is a reference to quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where two particles are linked and move in the same way even though they’re on different sides of a room or universe even.”
The video for ‘I Still Like Kelis’ expands further on this idea – two particles are born at the dawn of time then split up and travel through the Universe but move and evolve in similar ways before eventually both ending up on Earth and meeting as humans.
Doug continues…. “I’m not sure how I let myself get sucked into the idea of stop-motion again…. The video took bloody AGES to make but I guess I enjoyed it – there’s something quite meditative about sitting down for four hours and pushing about a piece of clay. It’s just a bit demoralising when you realise you’ve only shot 14 seconds.
Other recently revealed singles from the forthcoming debut LP include ‘1996’ and psychedelic-pop single ‘Floating in a Vacuum’, both of which have been warmly received by fans and critics alike, supported at radio by BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, John Kennedy from Radio X (who recently gave the band an Xposure live session), BBC6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins and Radcliffe & Maconie.
In terms of musical influences, fans of The Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, Sparklehorse and Tame Impala will all find something to love in Plastic Mermaids’ richly-textured sound. The Flaming Lips’ influence is also evident in their ecstatic live show which has manifested itself via the sparkly-gold-cape-clad choir and Patricia, their mirrorball mannequin, who made a welcome appearance at last month’s sold-out show at the Lexington in London.
