outh Korean visitors Yunmi Kang (vocals/piano) and Sangyeon Park (guitar) combine with the Bristol European Jazz Ensemble (David Mowat on trumpet, Federico Leonori on bass and Paolo Adamo drums) to perform at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley on Friday January 25. Entry is £8 from 7pm. The Nottingham Trent University Big Band perform at their Student Union on Shakespeare Street from 7.30pm, tickets are £8/4 NUS.
PRS perform Latin, swing and funk favourites on Saturday January 26 at Stray’s tapas and jazz in Newark; Steve Rodda is on guitar with Mat Short on bass and Si Potts on drums from 3-5pm. Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley present jazz/blues singer Mellow Baku’s Trio from 7pm, entry is £10. Kokopelli (Elliott Lewis on guitar and Ed Marchewicz on sax/flute) are doing the 7pm set at the Pelican Club in the Lace Market.
Sunday January 27 is swinging; firstly bright and early with vocalist Louise Gibbs, who joins the Andrew Wood Trio for Sunday Brunch 11am-1pm at Peggy’s, their delicious brunch and show for one is £14 and for two is £25 . The same ensemble feature in the Nottingham jazz jam at the same venue from 3-5pm (the second set is open to sitters in) entry is £4. Jake McMahon plays sax backed by the mighty BoHoP (Geoff Pearson on bass, Neil Hunter on keys and Ian Beestin on drums at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm. The Ben Martin Trio is at Yarn Bar in the Theatre Royal from 4-6pm; Ben is on guitar, Simon Paterson on double bass and Stephen Sherriff on piano. Major Ruse, who are fronted by guitarist Joe Egan play at Rough Trade for the Beat The Streets festival at 7.45pm. Tickets are £6 for the festival available online.
The Alfa Big Swing Band celebrates the big band greats on Monday January 28 at The Village Inn, Marehay, Ripley from 8.15pm. It’s the ‘Bell end of the month Jazz singers Night’ at The Bell Inn on Angel Row where I’m featured singer in the first set with Ben Martin’s Band – bring your charts in the right key if you want to get up in the second set; the gig runs from 8.30-10.30pm.
On Tuesday January 29 Dexter’s jazz club features saxophonist Stuart MacDonald’s Quartet with Barry Lee on keys, Geoff Pearson on bass and Clive Loveday on drums at the Headstocks in Cinderhill from 8.30–10.30pm, admission is £6.
I’m singing at an Art Culture Tourism event featuring other showcase performers from 6.30pm on Wednesday January 30 at the Berliner Bar on Chilwell Rd and also doing a solo set at the keys 8.30-9.15pm.
Trumpet wizard Hugh Pascall’s quartet host Jazz Discovery Thursday at Peggy’s on January 31 from 7pm, entry is £5. Finally the Washington Whirligig Jazz Band play at the Unwin Club, Unwin Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield from 8.30pm; entry is £7/6 members.
