Root Down with Michael Messer’s Mitra on Friday July 26 at Peggy’s Skylight in George Street, Hockley. They perform a unique musical trio of blues vocals and slide guitar (Michael), Hindustani slide guitar by Manish Pingle and tabla rhythms by Gurdain Singh Rayatt. Entry is £12/14 seated; their show starts at 8pm and afterwards DJ Daddio plays until late.
On Saturday July 27 The Calladine Taylor duo perform at Thrumpton Village Hall, Church Lane Thrumpton; international vocalist Rachael Calladine (who began her singing career with The Stapleford Big Band many years ago) is joined by acclaimed guitarist Andy Taylor at 7.30pm (doors and bar from 6.30pm) Tickets are £10 including food; to reserve your tickets and pay on the night call 01509 673101. At Peggy’s Skylight there is Classic Jazz and Middle Eastern Meze with acclaimed pianist Craig Milverton’s Trio featuring Sandy Suchodolski on double bass and Nick Millward on drums. They will be performing a mixed programme of standards, Oscar Peterson compositions and Craig’s own compositions; tickets are £12/10 and doors open at 7pm. (They also have their weekly afternoon tea accompanied by Paul Deats’ jazz piano between 12 and 5pm).
There’s a free Sunday Mezinee concert at Peggy’s on July 28 from 12 midday; the lovely Ed Marchewicz plays sax and flute alongside Paul Deats on piano. At 6pm in the same venue tenor saxophonist Pete Beardsworth joins the Andrew Wood Trio, entry is £8. Trombonist Brian Archer’s quartet performs in The Lion at Basford’s jazz club from 1.30-3.30pm.
At Peggy’s on Wednesday July 31 find Chai 6ix (pronounced Kai six). They are a Nottingham based sextet who fuse funk, jazz, soul and blues; the band is fronted by Chai Larden, traditionally a neo-soul singer, who has worked together with her fellow band members to create melodies and rhythms that are simultaneously familiar and unique. Join them for a dance at 8pm.
Trio Con Alma play Latin jazz at Peggy’s on Thursday August 1 at 8pm.
