I’m performing on Notts TV if you’d like to tune in at 5.30pm on Friday March 22 (Freeview channel 8, Virgin channel 159 or Sky channel 117), I’ll likely call into the Tap Rhythm Jam hosted by Jess Murray with live Jazz from guitarist Joe Egan’s Trio at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley on the way back for a jig. She hosts a workshop from 6.30pm (tap shoes supplied) then the main jam is from 8-10pm, after which, DJ Daddio plays until late. Tickets are £8 in advance or on the door.
Same place next day, Saturday March 23, Paul Deat’s jazz piano accompanies afternoon tea (£22 for two or £12 for one, free entry for just drinks) from 2-5pm. Guitarist Neil C. Young heads up YoPoSh at Stray’s Coffee in Newark from 3-5pm featuring Si Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass. Back at Peggy’s from 7pm are Djanco (The Whitworth Brothers, Thom and Rich on guitars plus violin virtuoso Andy Aitchison) who fuse the spirit of gypsy swing with the flair of flamenco, entry is £10.
On Sunday March 24, The Andrew Wood Trio play Gershwin at Peggy’s with Andrew on drums, Matt Ratcliffe on the grand piano and Dominic Holmes on double bass from 1-3pm; entry is £7. They stick around performing as the house band for the Nottingham Jazz Jam from 3.30-5.30pm – entry for that is £4 (or free if you attended the main show). The Shipstone Street Jazz Orchestra are at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.
It’s singers’ night on Monday March 25 at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm, the first set features Theresa Caruana and the second set is an open mic – please bring your music charts in the right key for the accompanists Ben Martin and his band! The Alfa Big Swing Band perform at Village Inn, Marehay in Ripley from 8.15pm.
The award-winning Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Big Band perform a concert at Peggy’s on Tuesday March 26 from 8pm, tickets are available from the events page on the University’s website, £8/4 NTU students.
Trumpeter Hugh Pascall hosts this week’s Jazz Discovery Thursday at Peggy’s on March 28 with his quartet, entry is just £5 and doors open at 7pm. The Unwin Club in Sutton-in-Ashfield features Martin Bennett’s Green River Jazz Band; admission is £7/6 for members and the music starts at 8.30pm.
