’m singing at my piano at The Star Inn in Beeston from 5-7pm this Friday June 28 for the start of their weekend festival full of live music hosted by the local Round Table.
Root Down with Meraki; a London based sextet who take their name from a word modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love – they do a combination of neo-soul, jazz, funk and rock at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley, entry is £8 from 7pm and DJ Daddio plays until late.
At the same venue on Saturday June 29 it’s the weekly jazz accompanied afternoon tea with Paul Deats on his grand piano between 12-5pm. From 7pm Djanco fuse the spirit of gypsy swing with the flair of flamenco to create a distinctive jazz flavour; their performance features violin virtuoso Andy Aitchison, entry is £12/10.
On Sunday June 30 Peggy’s Mezinee welcomes the Andrew Wood Trio featuring the mighty Tony Kofi on alto saxophone, doors open at 12 and the show runs from 1-3pm, £10/8 entry. This is followed at 3.30pm by the Nottingham Jazz Jam with the same gang – entry is £4 or free if you attend the previous concert too. The Lion in Basford present guitarist Jamie Taylor’s Trio featuring Matt Ratcliffe on keys and Steve Hanley on drums from 1.30-3.30pm. Cool Jazz are playing at St Martin’s Church in Bilborough at 2pm; hear vocal and instrumental numbers from Duke Ellington to Herbie Hancock within this recently restored medieval church (hosted by Bilborough Arts Festival).
All the way from New Orleans Wednesday July 1 Tank & The Bangas are Soundin’ Off at Peggy’s from 7pm; they have added tabasco sauce and gumbo favoured beats to jazz stereotypes; entry is £30 seated (includes £5 deposit redeemable on food) or £20 standing, do book in advance via their website.
For Jazz Discovery Thursday on July 4 there’s an exhibition of digital drawings made during live performances at Peggy’s Skylight by Roger Knott-Fayle accompanied by live Jazz from Trio Con Alma from 8pm, doors open at 7pm.
