Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

The week’s jazz:

Saxophonist Rick Woolgar fronts PRS (Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass guitar) to play jazz and blues standards at Stray’s Coffee in Newark on Saturday February 2 from 3-5pm. Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley host a classy afternoon tea accompanied by Paul Deats at the grand piano from 2-5pm; tea for two is £22 or £12 for one – you get plenty of cakes, scones, quiche, macaroons and quality teas and coffee. In the evening they have young prodigy pianist Harry Bolt’s quartet featuring Duncan Eagles on sax, Nick Jurd on double bass and Euan Palmer on drums, entry from 7pm is £10.

Singer/double bassist Nicola Farnon’s Trio are doing two shows at Peggy’s on Sunday February 3; first for Sunday Brunch from 11am-1pm; brunch for one is £14 and for two is £25, then another show from 1.30pm for which is entry £7.   I’m singing with Shell’s Belles big band at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  Richard ‘Dickie’ Baker is on piano with Steve Rodda on guitar, Mat Short on bass guitar and Andy White on drums at the Bees Knees in Laneham from 5pm.

The Bell Inn on Angel Row host Ben Martin’s Band on Monday February 4 from 8.30-10.30pm.

Crimson Tree bring much needed Cuban vibes to Sherwood from 7.30pm on Wednesday February 6 courtesy of the Ariel Cubillas Trio.  The Risley Park Jazz Club starts again with favourites The Savannah Jazz Band;  the session times have changed to 8-10.30pm and admission is £9.  Peggy’s present haunting singer/songwriter Dan Chapman from 7pm.

Latin Trio Con Alba play for Jazz Discovery Thursday back at Peggy’s on February 7 from 7pm, entry is £5.  Jazz Steps present harpist Alina Bzhehzinska’s Quartet at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold who play the music of Alice Coltrane featuring Tony Kofi on alto sax; tickets are £12/5 NUS from the theatre direct.  Nottingham Rhythm Club at The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club, Nottingham Road, Basford have the Alex Clarke Hot Five from 8-10.30pm, doors open at 7pm and entry is £9/8 for members or £6 NUS.
