Welcome to the first of our new weekly Jazz columns by Jeanie Barton.

Stray’s Tapas and Jazz in Newark welcome singer/pianist and radio regular Wendy Kirkland alongside Pat Sprakes on guitar and Mat Short on fretless bass this Saturday June 23 from 3-5pm.
From 10pm until midnight the Swingologie Trio play The Pelican Club in St. Mary’s Place; Richard Smith is on electric guitar, Wayne Jefferies, acoustic guitar and John Coulson, double bass.

On Sunday June 24 from 12pm-2.30pm Swing Gitan perform at Donington Park for the Vintage Motorsport Festival; Elliott Lewis is on guitar, James Tolhurst on trumpet, Wayne Jefferies on guitar and John Coulson on double bass. 12 To The Bar are at Newark RAFA Club as part of Armed Forces Day from 1.30-3.30pm. Concurrently the Shipstone Street Jazz Orchestra strut their stuff with the sensational Sarah Simmonds on vocals at The Lion in Basford. From 4.30-6.30pm Matt Palmer’s Trio entertain at the Yarn bar in Theatre Square (Matt is on clarinet and saxophone, Wayne Jefferies on guitar and John Coulson on double bass.)  It’s the Nottingham Jazz Jam at the Malt Cross too featuring Bryan Corbett on trumpet from 5.30-6.30pm the jam session follows until 9pm with Matt Ratcliffe on piano, Martyn Spencer on double bass and your host Andrew Wood on drums.

Monday June 25 finds seven piece band Cranberry Flick at The Sportsman in Long Eaton; doors open 7.30pm. It’s also the singers jam at The Bell Inn on Angel Row featuring the golden tonsils of Cat Mancini; Matt Ratcliffe is on organ and Ben Martin on guitar from 8.30-10.30pm – it’s open mic in the second set.

Saxophonist Ben Martin’s Quartet are at Dexter’s Jazz Club in the Headstocks Pub, Cinderhill on Tuesday June 26 from 8.30-10.30pm. He is joined by Matt Ratcliffe on keys, Martyn Spencer on double bass and Andrew Wood on drums, entry is £6.

The Crimson Tree have The Sugar Tree playing a mix of Latin, jazz, pop and soul music on Wednesday June 27 from 7.30pm while Dave Brennan’s legendary 7 piece Jubilee Jazz Band present a feast of New Orleans style jazz at Risley Park Jazz Club from 8.30-11pm; admission is £9.
