It’s Friday June 14 and time to Root Down with PYJÆN who come to Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley from London; Dani Diodato is on guitar, Ben Vize on saxophone, Dylan Jones on trumpet, Charlie Hutchinson on drums and Ben Crane on bass, entry is £6 from 7pm and DJ Daddio plays until late.
Same place following day Paul Deats is at the grand piano between 2-5pm for afternoon tea Saturday June 15 and from 7pm that night it’s Alex Curtis’ Quartet; he is on piano/keyboards with George Crowley on tenor sax, Marc Michel on drums and Dave O’Brien on bass, entry is £10.
On Sunday June 16, 12 To The Bar are at Newark RAFA Club off London Rd from 12-2pm, featuring guest singers Claire Hyatt and John Brennan, entry is £3 on the door. There is still jazz at The Bell Inn on Angel Row, but now only on Sundays from 12.30pm with the Footwarmers’ weekly residency. Splendid Orator are a 3 piece from Nottingham comprising Peter Beardsworth (keys), and Rob Rosa (Violin) and Roger Rosa (guitar); they present their musical odyssey for the Sunday Mezinee at Peggy’s from 1pm, entry is £5. I’m singing with Stephen Sherriff on keys and Andrew Wood on drums at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm, I’ll also do some of my songs at the piano while Stephen blows his sax – bebop along. The Nottingham Jazz Orchestra present Bone Idol at The Federation Club on Claremont Rd at 8.30pm; a night of slides and swing featuring some classic big band trombone features, entry is £10/8 NUS.
Sounding Off at Peggy’s from 7pm on Wednesday June 19 is young, gifted pianist Lucas Walters who plays classic jazz and ballads alongside Ted Smiley on drums, Reuben Savage on guitar, Barney McNamara on electric bass, and Alistair Beaven on saxophone.
Guitarist Thom Whitworth’s Trio present Jazz Discovery on Thursday June 20 at the same venue; entry is £5 and doors open at 7pm.
