MUSIC – Jeannie Bartons Jazz Column 7-13 September 2018

 

School’s back and the city is jazz packed.  The Swingologie trio kick off at the Pelican Club in the Lace Market on Friday September 7; Wayne Jefferies is on acoustic guitar with Richard Smith on electric guitar and John Coulson on double bass from 10pm.

On Saturday September 8 Fiona Stein sings at her piano with PRS (and Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass) at Stray’s in Newark from 3-5pm.  Elliott Lewis is on guitar with Ed Marchewicz on sax and flute at the Pelican Club in the Lace Market from 7pm, Elliott is then joined by Mat Short on bass and Tom Dempsey on drums for the late slot from 10pm. Matt Ratcliffe’s leads the Unity Quartet from his Hammond organ; they cover classic tunes from Larry Young’s seminal album, Unity at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street from 9pm, rising star Xhosa Cole is on tenor sax, Hugh Pascal on trumpet and Jim Bashford on drums, entry is £8/7 concessions.

 

On Sunday September 9 guitarist Tobie Carpenter’s Organ Trio perform at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  Barry Lee is on keys with Ed Marchewicz on sax and flute at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge, from 2pm-4pm while Theresa Caruana sings with Matt Ratcliffe at The Lord Nelson in Burton Joyce also from 2pm.

 

The Omega Band clock in at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm on Monday September 10.

Tuesday means Dexter’s Jazz Club at The Headstocks on Bagnall Rd in Cinderhill; on September 11 they have pianist Richard Hallam’s Trio featuring Geoff Pearson on double bass and Mike Say on drums from 8.30pm, entry is £6.

The Crimson Tree in Sherwood have singer/guitarist Martin Sanders’ Duo featuring Ben Martin on sax on Wednesday September 12 from 7.30pm.

All week Jazz Steps present The Big Easy at the libraries (Monday 10 in Beeston, Tuesday 11 in Worksop, Wednesday 12 in Southwell and Thursday 13 in West Bridgford).  Shows start at 7.30pm, tickets ( £10/£8 concessions) are available in advance from the libraries direct.

Also on Thursday September 13 Jazz Steps bring Tony Kofi’s mighty Portrait of Cannonball (Adderley) to the Bonington Theatre in Arnold; Kofi is on alto sax with Byron Wallen on trumpet, Alex Webb on piano, Andy Cleyndert on bass, Alfonso Vitale on drums and Deelee Dube on vocals – tickets are £12/£5 NUS and the show starts at 8pm.  Back at Peggy’s Skylight, bassist Simon Paterson leads Angels in the Architecture featuring Joe Egan (AKA ESHEK) on guitar and Hugh Pascall on trumpet; they perform from 9pm, entry is £6/5 concessions.

Where no entry fee is mentioned, assume your purchases from the venue cover the music.
