Marika Hackman has announced a series of in-store performances, which includes Nottingham’s Rough Trade, around the release of her new album ‘I’m Not Your Man’, out 2nd June on AMF Records (Loyle Carner) and Sub Pop in the US. Two stunning tracks from the album have been released so far, ‘Boyfriend’ and ‘My Lover Cindy’.

“Flips the bird at male inadequacies with gleeful brutality” – Sunday Times Culture

“Grungy dream-pop gloom” – The Guardian

“A muscular call to arm” – Clash

“Lean, mean and really, really funny” – NME

“Chunky, scraped riffs and a gutsy chorus” – The Line Of Best Fit

Having recently put together a killer live band to tour the album Marika has announced a fresh run of shows and festivals, all tickets can be purchased from Marika’s website. [ Get tickets HERE ]

Hackman consciously wanted to turn up the volume in the studio this time around, to live out her teenage fantasy of fronting a raucous band. “I wanted to let rip and lose control. That’s the kind of music I’ve always wanted to make. When I was younger I wasn’t looking at Joni Mitchell. I was looking at Nirvana thinking, ‘I wanna be like that!’”

Hackman’s rebellious new album ‘I’m Not Your Man’ is not afraid to call out the big questions around femininity, sexual identity, millennial ennui, the pressures of living in a social media bubble and the perils of being young in a fast-paced world. ‘My Lover Cindy’ follows the muscular post-punk call to arms first single ‘Boyfriend’ which sits atop the A-list at 6 Music.

‘My Lover Cindy’ comments on the way we can dispose of one another, how sex can be a “throwaway thing” which can lead to a “terror of falling out of love with people” and a distrust of your own emotions. The themes of sexual fluidity are ongoing throughout the song “People find it easier now to identify as queer, lesbian or gay, it feels more safe.” Hackman hasn’t yet decided how to define her own sexuality but has enough experience to know what she isn’t.

Following a rapturously received run of shows in SXSW with The Big Moon, Marika and her band will be bringing the noise to a town near you very soon. “I can’t wait to see the reaction,” she says. “That’s the thrill of reinventing yourself. I might piss off a lot people but this is still my brain, it’s still my world, and I’m gonna create it how I want.” Full list of live dates below.
