This version of Jekyll and Hyde is a real reflection on the world we currently live in. It tells a gripping story of morality, ethics and the inner struggle of our own human nature. It has been rewritten from the point of view of Harriet Jekyll, Jekyll‘s widow, who aims to continue her husband’s work, which was based on the assumption that human beings are made up of many different facets.
Whilst the playwright, Evan Placey, remains respectful of Stevenson’s original story, it moves us forward using both Victorian Society and a more modern framework allowing us to reflect on the issues of both. Jekyll has to push against a very patriarchal society and tries to get her voice and discoveries heard unsuccessfully. Current issues are clearly considered with references to Irish doctors that refuse to give abortions, to the enormous pay gap between men and women and to the way young women’s complaints on online harassment are dismissed. It thus becomes an intense multi-layered play of our time.
