Northern Soul has returned to the Midlands venue known for its legendary all-dayers in the 1970s and beyond.
The first event at The Palais in Nottingham – organised by The Palais Northern Soul Club – saw all generations taking to the dancefloor on Saturday 5 October.
Known for its soulful music, sharp fashion and athletic dance moves, Northern Soul has been undergoing a renaissance in recent years with club nights springing up around the UK.
While Wigan Casino was the epicentre of the scene in the 1960s, the genre quickly took hold across industrial and working class towns, sweeping into the Midlands in the 70s, with Nottingham’s The Palais attracting ‘Soulies’ from around the region for its famous all dayers.
Now a second night has been announced due to the exceptional demand on Sunday 20 April 2025 for a Bank Holiday special, running from 6pm to midnight.
Will Foot, one of the DJs on the returning night, said: “Seeing multiple generations of soul music lovers happily dancing alongside each other on a perfect dance floor in a beautiful room with an unbelievable sound system was a joy to behold. Long live The Palais.”
Mal Redman, long-time Nottingham Northern Soul promoter, said: “It was great to see a full dancefloor all night with happy smiling faces – it was as though we have never been away! We are looking forward to Northern Soul on Bank Holiday Sunday in 2025, when The Palais will be 100 years old.”
The Palais Northern Soul Club added: “We’re thrilled to bring back Northern Soul to The Palais. We hear you loud and clear, this was one of our most requested nights by nostalgic movers to first-time flyers. Whether it’s your 1st or 100th, come and join the Northern Soul community. Turn up your collars, lace up your nice shoes and get back to the floor!”
