With temperatures across Nottinghamshire due to plummet tomorrow (8 November) housing provider Newark and Sherwood Homes has compiled its top tips for keeping warm this winter.
1. Layer up – wear layered clothing, but nothing too tight or bulky to keep toasty, and make sure to wear a hat when heading outside.
2. Keep moving – if you can, move around regularly as this keeps your circulation flowing.
3. Stay in touch – the colder months can be particularly worrying for older friends and relatives, so keep in regular contact with your loved ones as they may not tell you they are struggling unless you ask.
4. Consume hot food and drinks – these will help keep you feeling toasty even when it’s frosty outside. Hot milk and soup are good options.
5. Stay healthy – check in with your GP to make sure any health problems are addressed.
6. Snuggle up – using a hot water bottle or electric blanket at night time can help keep the cold at bay.
7. Fight draughts – where possible, keep curtains closed and use draught excluders to keep your home warm.
Many of the 5,500 homes managed by Newark and Sherwood Homes are occupied by older people who may struggle to keep warm when the temperature drops.
Julie Davidson, tenancy and estates manager at Newark and Sherwood Homes, said: “Many older people live alone and may not realise how, just by taking a few small steps, they can keep warm and healthy during the winter months.
“Each year, we communicate several tips to our residents to help prevent them from getting cold when the temperature drops. We encourage our older residents in particular to keep tell people how they are, so that any issues can be identified as early as possible.”
