A team of Britain’s brightest MPs will take on a group of The University of Nottingham’s most knowledgeable professors in a battle of the intellects as part of the inaugural Nottingham in Parliament day tomorrow (Tuesday, October 25).
The University Challenge-style event, to take place in The State Rooms in the Speaker’s Apartments in the Houses of Parliament, will see expert quizmaster and Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt. Hon John Bercow MP test the general knowledge, creativity and wit of the two teams with a range of difficult questions.
Taking on the clever professors is Team House of Commons. Team captain, Minister for Universities and Science, Jo Johnson MP, will be joined by Nottinghamshire’s Rt. Hon Anna Soubry MP as well as Chris Bryant MP, Stella Creasy MP and Jess Phillips MP.
Team University of Nottingham is made up of Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the prestigious Russell Group of Universities, Professor Sir David Greenaway; Registrar Dr Paul Greatrix; Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Social Sciences (and the UK’s foremost academic magician) Professor Todd Landman and Rights and Justice expert, Professor Zoe Trodd.
University Team captain, Professor Sir David Greenaway said: “This one-off battle of the intellects will be a fun and light-hearted part of Nottingham in Parliament day 2016.
“The day will bring together all the very best elements of Nottingham as a city, a business hub, a home of civic institutions and a pioneer of cultural heritage – and we at The University of Nottingham are looking forward to showcasing the best of the University, and the best of Nottingham on a national stage throughout the day.”
Nottingham in Parliament day is a ground-breaking initiative developed and led by The University of Nottingham, which has brought together over 100 partners from across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands to take-over Westminster for a day.
Throughout the day, there will be 45 events that will celebrate the ideas, people and businesses that make Nottingham great, including Michelin-starred Chef, Sat Bains cooking up a storm to explore the Future of Food; Nottingham Forest and Notts County giving MPs “political football” masterclasses, while Robin Hood will be taking part in some “Westminster Target Practice” on College Green.
The University Challenge event is supported by Challenge Notts, The University of Nottingham and Cartwright Communications.
