Laughter will top the bill this autumn at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall Nottingham, with a rib-tickling season featuring some of the nation’s best-loved comedians: Ross Noble, Jimmy Carr, Adam Hills, Sean Lock, Catherine Tate and Reeves & Mortimer are all due to visit the venue in this coming season.
Music will play a starring role throughout the autumn, too, with a range of pop, classical and variety concerts on offer. ABC, Ronan Keating, David Essex, Van Morrison, Rebecca Ferguson, Deacon Blue, Jools Holland and Daniel O’Donnell will all visit the venue this forthcoming season. The nation’s leading musicals star, Michael Ball, and the nation’s favourite tenor, Alfie Boe, will join forces for the first time with a brand new live show visiting the Royal Concert Hall for three nights in the autumn.
Back by popular demand, other bands returning to the venue include The Hollies, Halfway to Paradise – The Billy Fury Story, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, The Australian Pink Floyd, Vampires Rock and the Sensational 60s Experience, which features legendary 60s performers Freddie and the Dreamers, Chris Farlowe, Herman’s Hermits, The Merseybeats, The Swinging Blue Jeans and more.
Acclaimed composer, Debbie Wiseman, and The Locrian Ensemble of London will perform The Music of Wolf Hall. Debbie’s score for the BBC’s recent adaptation of the award-winning novel will be performed alongside readings from the book.
The autumn season will offer a programme of dance to appeal to all ages and tastes, from the dazzling contemporary talent of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, to a reimagining of the treasured classic Beauty & the Beast in a stunning new production from Northern Ballet. Little ones can also experience the magic of attending their first live ballet with Northern Ballet’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Musical theatre fans will have plenty of choice in a season brimming with iconic music, much-loved storylines and legendary star names. Britain’s greatest song and dance man, Tommy Steele, will star in The Glenn Miller Story, a brand new musical about the life of the American band leader. Jason Donovan will star as record producer Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet, a musical inspired by the famous recording session that brought together Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. Other musical highlights of the season include The Sound of Music, starring The Voice’s Lucy O’Byrne, and the fantastic feel-good celebration of soul, The Commitments, starring Kevin Kennedy. Taking its inspiration from the classic romantic movie, Ghost – The Musical will return once more to the venue with its innovative live stage production. Nottingham Operatic Society will present the madcap musical The Producers, based on Mel Brooks’ Oscar-winning film.
Set in a time of citizen protests and radical regime change, the Touring Consortium Theatre Company will present a bold, new dramatic adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. The Full Monty, a play based on the hilarious and heartfelt British film, will return with an all-star cast led by Gary Lucy, Joe Absolom and Andrew Dunn.
The Nottingham Classics season 2016-17 will launch this autumn with Brussels Philharmonic under the charismatic conductor Stéphane Denève, performing music from Beethoven, Connesson and Respighi. Renowned pianist, Stephen Hough, will perform with the Hallé orchestra under the baton of Sir Mark Elder, performing Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 and music from Janáček and Dvořák. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra will perform music from Britten, Korngold and Berloiz under conductor Nicholas Collon and featuring violin soloist Vilde Frang. Duncan Ward will conduct Sinfonia Viva and pianist Cordelia Williams as they perform music from Stravinsky, Sibelius and Beethoven. The world’s favourite guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, with Royal Northern Sinfonia, will perform a selection of music for classical guitar along with new arrangements of timeless Beatles songs. Opera North will return with a week of stunning operas including Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, Britten’s Billy Budd and Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica.
Music, dance and laughter will also be provided this autumn by The Ken Dodd Happiness Show, The Good Old Days of Variety featuring The Grumbleweeds, the RAF in Concert, the Magic of Motown (enter our competition here for your chance to win tickets), John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra performing music from the movies and Simply Gershwin, a glamorous, toe-tapping celebration of George and Ira Gershwin’s greatest works.
Families can enjoy all the fun of the fair with the Chinese State Circus or take a wild journey of exploration with TV presenter Steve Backshall. Stars of the Canadian teen TV dance show, The Next Step, will bring their high energy live stage show to the venue this season. Professor Brian Cox will take audiences on a dazzling journey through space and time with his captivating new science show.
The Beanbag Music Club, which gives children under 6 a fun introduction to live music, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in style this season with a very special musical birthday party. On stage, Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine will bring fizztickling fun and wizzpopping magic for all the family.
Spoken word and music events on the Theatre Royal’s Dress Circle foyer continue throughout the autumn with a programme of free Live at Lunch performances and Third Stage evening shows, including a sell-out week of performances from Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience. The popular Sunday Morning Piano series also continues, with performances this coming season from Nicholas McCarthy, Isata Kanneh-Mason and Alexander Ullman.
