Mirror, mirror on the wall, is Snow White the fairest panto of them all?
Families at the Theatre Royal Nottingham definitely thought so. From a magical mirror which rises from the orchestra pit to a car which flies over the audience, on a damp and dismal night in Nottingham, the production provided plenty of escapism to entertain both young and old.
Headlining the show, with talent and personality, we have squeaky-voiced comic Joe Pasquale as Muddles (complete with motorised toilet) starring alongside Steps star and stage actress, Faye Tozer as The Wicked Queen Lucrecia; two pro’s who can deliver twice daily and knock it out of the park for weeks on end.
Joe is a master of variety and family entertainment. There was a lot of fart/toilet humour to keep the younger audience amused (although a little repetitive at times if you pardon the pun), with just enough double entendres to keep the adults happy. You can’t help but be swept away by the silliness and joy of his performance, but I feel he really comes into his own when going off-script.
Faye Tozer equally matches his brilliance in her role as the cackling wicked queen chasing the suave Prince. Together the duo have great stage chemistry. Faye is the subject of some of the biggest cheers of the night, but her fabulous vocals aren’t fully utilised until the second act when we get Steps hit ‘Scared of the Dark’ woven nicely into the story, followed by a short Steps medley finale. Interesting to see her in a baddie role. As someone actually very beautiful and likeable it took some time to convince me, and I’d definitely say the second act is the stronger of the two.
Lucy Ireland is a perfect Snow White and looks a lot like a Disney Princess. While Jamal Kane Crawford plays a fantastic and handsome Prince William of West Bridgford effortlessly, not giving in to the teasing from the unarguably talented Pasquale. There’s also a twist on the traditional storyline which I won’t give away because…spoilers.
This all-singing, all-dancing high octane, in-your-face bundle of family fun will please kids big and small ensuring this Christmas production is filled with sparkle and joy
