I had never seen so many under 5yrs olds in one place at one time as I did today when walking into Theatre Royal for early afternoon showing of The Gruffalo. They were literally peeing themselves with excitement and it had never taken so long to get to our seats, however their juvenile thrill was as contagious as it was cute.
By the time the lights dimmed and the show began I felt 5 years old again, super excited for what was in store over the next hour or so and the show did not disappoint. The cast of three were incredible; using their minimal props to maximise the use of imagination, i.e turning their hats into birds and bunnies.
The story followed that of the well known children’s book by Julia Donaldson enough for lots of mega loud audience participation, with cries of roasted fox and owl ice cream. However it was adapted with ingenuity to fit in some great original songs and clever choreography as well as some witty humour for the adults in the audience. Tall Stories did not fail with this production from the set to the cast it was near perfection.
If you have little ones I definitely recommend getting yourself down to Theatre Royal this weekend. Tickets available here.
