Review: The Serial Killer Next Door – The Theatre Royal Nottingham

Would you know if you were living next door to a serial killer? This was the question posed by renowned psychologist Emma Kenny during her gripping and thought-provoking exploration into the dark and mysterious world of serial killers when it visited Nottingham’s Theatre Royal .

I love a bit of true crime, but had not preconception about how an evening like this would unfold. The stage is set with a large screen showing some of the worlds most notorious killers instantly immersing the audience into the macabre world we were about to delve into.

Emma Kenny takes to the stage with an air of confidence and knowledge, immediately captivating the audience. Her expertise in the field of psychology and her deep understanding of the minds of serial killers is evident as she shares her insights and stories from some of the most infamous cases in history.

Despite the subject matter, Emma approaches it with sensitivity and respect. She makes it clear that her intention is not to glorify or sensationalise the actions of serial killers, but rather to educate and shed light on the psychological factors that contribute to their heinous crimes. And if we’re to take anything away from the evening, as potential victims, it’s “Do not comply”.

Throughout the evening, Emma Kenny seamlessly blends her expertise with engaging storytelling and facts. She wove each story with a perfect balance of chilling details and psychological analysis, keeping the audience captivated. Her ability to humanise these monsters while also delving into their twisted minds is truly compelling.

Crime scene photographs and newspaper clippings provide a visual context that enhanced our evenings experience. Emma Kenny effectively used these visuals to reinforce her points and bring the stories to life in a hauntingly realistic manner.

With such a vast amount of material to cover, there isn’t time to fully delve into each case in great detail. However, Emma does a great job of delivering a comprehensive overview of the subject matter. We learn about what makes a serial killer. The difference between organised and disorganised killers, as well as who would be a likely victim.

Overall, The Serial Killer Next Door was an exceptional evening that certainly left a lasting impact. Emma Kenny’s expertise, combined with her engaging storytelling and respectful approach to the subject matter, created an unforgettable experience.

The tour provides a unique opportunity to delve into the minds of serial killers and gain a deeper understanding of the psychological factors that contribute to their actions. If you have a fascination with true crime or a desire to learn more about the human psyche, I highly recommend you see it.
