Thriller Live is more of a concert than a show, it showcased Michael Jackson’s prodigious talent, as a singer, songwriter, creative and iconic dancer. It isn’t his life story or just about his multi Grammy award winning album Thriller, but rather it’s a celebration of his best hits and Michael’s dancing style and ability. I had forgotten to be honest how diverse his songbook was pop, rock, ballads, this show includes over 30 numbers.
The audience participation at first might have been slightly awkward but by the end of the over two hours the boogie got into the crowd and everyone was into the party atmosphere.
Vocals
The very talented Cleopatra Higgins, is one of four lead vocalists, sharing Mr. Jacksons’s chart hits between them. Some as solos some as duets and some as harmonies.
All four of the lead singers were exceptional, although I enjoyed Rory Taylor solo She’s out of my life, as a contrast to all the exuberance of the dancing and lights being stripped back and vulnerable as was the original. Smooth Criminal is one of my all time favourite tracks and we were lucky enough to have it twice in the show.
Dancing
The dancing was without doubt the highlight of the evening dynamic, energetic and enthusiastic they all appeared to be having a great time. The mock fight scenes in Beat it were particularly good, I enjoyed seeing fit young bodies similar to Chippendales performing highly skilful dancing it goes without saying the iconic moonwalk impressed.
Band
The live band and singers bring Jacksons hits to life of course, Mike Lindup the musical director did a great job. The crowd is also treated to the guitarists coming to the front of the stage in the more rock numbers, like Dirty Diana.
It was a good value entertaining night out, I think I would have preferred to see it at the weekend; as its still running until Saturday you can….
