SOCKS WITH SANDALS – THE ULTIMATE FASHION FAUX PAS OR A SUPER COOL COMBO?

JOIN THE DEBATE WITH THE FRAMEWORK KNITTERS MUSEUM AND ACCLAIMED ARTIST BRUCE ASBESTOS

Bruce Asbestos at the Framework Knitters Museum

At the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire we love socks, and we think they should be worn all year around – even in the summer.

To celebrate we have teamed up with artist Bruce Asbestos to find out if you are ‘yay’ or ‘no way’ in the big summer #socksandsandalsdebate

Bruce Asbestos has taken time out from his busy schedule (he currently has exhibitions at the Quad Gallery in Derby and at the concept store Browns East, London) to help get the debate started with a short film you can watch and download here:

We would love you to help us celebrate the humble sock by sharing with us your pictures of socks and sandals. Or even better by coming to see us at the Museum in your craziest combos.

So, whether you are #sockson or #socksoff join the debate and tag us on social media @fwkmuseum #fwkmuseum #socksandsandalsdebate

It would be great if we could get the debate going far and wide, please share and let’s see how many miles from Ruddington we can reach by the end of the summer.  Perhaps we could reach the sock and sandal wearers of Mudford Sock in Somerset or even the shores of the remote Sock LakeMontana?

Our tiny but mighty Tripadvisor award-winning Museum is a unique surviving example of a 19th century framework knitters’ yard.  Lovingly restored as a living history museum, here you can discover the lives of framework knitters in Victorian times, and explore the 400 year old history of stockings, tights and socks.  invented by William Lee of Calverton near Nottingham in 1589, the framework knitting machine was the first major stage in the mechanisation of the textile industry and played an important part in the early history of the Industrial Revolution.

Socks and sandals date back to the Romans. The modern image is based on the fashion for German tourists to wear knee-high socks and Birkenstocks.  Much maligned, socks and sandals have recently had a renaissance – last month David Beckham was spotted at a Dior fashion show in chic black socks and sandals.

And you can make a style statement with Bruce’s neon green and bright pink crocodile inspired socks, available to buy at Parkers Yard at the Framework Knitters Museum
