The start of September heralds a new season at Lakeside Arts and as usual there’s no shortage of things to do this autumn.
On 30 September the first major exhibition of photographer Roger Mayne’s (1929-2014) work since 1999 will open in the Djanogly Gallery. In addition to his depictions of Southam Street, the exhibition also features some of Mayne’s less well-known work from locations outside the capital; in 1964, Mayne worked at Raleigh Cycles in Nottingham, where he embraced the dynamic setting and low lighting of the factory to produce a series of heroic portraits of the workers.
In 2015 Nottingham became one of only 20 cities around the world to be recognised by UNESCO as a City of Literature – in celebration of this the University of Nottingham’s Manuscripts and Special Collections has created a new exhibition, Collected Words, in the Weston Gallery, highlighting the work of Nottinghamshire writers and the treasures to be found in the historic collections of local literature lovers. The exhibition opens today, Friday 8 September and runs until Sunday 3 December.
The world exclusive exhibition, Dinosaurs of China, continues at Lakeside until 29 October with the programme of talks, family events, and film screenings continuing for the period. The exhibition has already been extremely popular with Nottingham audiences as they lap up the only time that visitors can see this vast selection of fossils and skeletons outside of Asia and will bring to life the history of how dinosaurs evolved into the birds that live alongside us today.
Music highlights this season include Nigeria’s mighty The Yoruba Women Choir who take to the stage at the Djanogly Theatre on Tuesday 3 October; the choir’s 10 female singers and 5-piece band have won fans the world over for their rich harmonies and joyful mixture of Gospel and secular songs. Later in the month, on Thursday 26 October the Djanogly Recital Hall will host a performance of Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin, by one of the UK’s best loved baritones, Roderick Williams, alongside his long-standing duo partner, Iain Burnside (piano).
As ever, Lakeside’s autumn programme includes a huge range of events for children and their families; there’s powerful drama in Nottingham based Dragon Breath Theatre Company’s Jumping On My Shadow on Saturday 23 September; chaos, mayhem and stupidity reign supreme in The Three Musketeers on Sunday 15 October, and an epic adventure of love and magic comes to life as Michael Morpurgo’s King Arthur is brought to life for children aged 7+. There is also a full programme of events to keep little ones entertained during the October half term break, from creative craft workshops to wilderness survival days.
November sees the return of Lustre; from Saturday 4 until Sunday 5 November, Lakeside Arts will transform into a luxury craft fair, with over 70 of the country’s finest contemporary craft makers selling everything from artisan jewellery and bags, to ceramics, glass and tableware. With entry costing just £5 this is a must for the style and design conscious seeking a unique Christmas gift or treat.
Come the end of November, the Vikings are coming! Viking: Rediscover the Legend opens at Lakeside Arts on Saturday 25 November with a spectacular opening weekend of events, as well as the large exhibition. Viking: Rediscover the Legend is a collaboration between the British Museum and York Museums Trust and will feature nationally important Viking and Anglo Saxon artefacts, including recent finds, and will re-examine the influence of the Vikings in Britain.
This is just a taste of what’s on offer this season at Lakeside Arts. For the full programme and online booking for ticketed events visit lakesidearts.org.uk, or call the box office on 0115 846 7777.
