Building on last year’s highly popular and enjoyable ‘relaxed performance’, the Theatre Royal Nottingham will be offering not one but two specially adapted performances of ALADDIN this year.  These two performances of the family pantomime have been adapted for customers with a wide range of disabilities and those on the autistic spectrum.

On Wednesday 6 January, the 1.30pm matinee and 7.15pm evening performances of ALADDIN will be performed in a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels.  There will be small changes to the sound levels and lighting.  No pyrotechnics, confetti or streamers will be used.  The auditorium doors will be left open so customers can use the chill-out zone on Dress Circle foyer to relax and then return when they feel ready.  Customers, if they wish, will also be free to move around in the auditorium during the performance.

These two special performances have been coordinated by the Theatre Royal’s access and education teams in partnership with the pantomime’s cast and crew in order to encourage more families, schools and groups to be able to participate in and enjoy live theatre.

The Theatre Royal’s Creative Learning Coordinator, Caroline Pope, who has led this project from its inception, said “Last year our relaxed matinee performance was a sell-out success, so to build on that success we wanted to offer even more this year.  The feedback we received from some of our visiting families was to ask if we could offer an evening Relaxed Performance as well as a matinee.  Our producers, Qdos Pantomimes, were very supportive of the idea and together I think we’ve managed to offer a fantastic choice to families as well as to schools and groups. The changes we make to the pantomime performance itself are only small, but these minor adaptations added to the more relaxed atmosphere on the day makes such a difference. We love having the opportunity to offer everybody the chance to enjoy live theatre, especially those who may have felt uncomfortable in a live theatre performance before.”
