The stunning theatre royal was a buzz of excitement amongst old and young alike…afterall who doesn’t like a good panto? And this was a good panto.
It opened with the beautiful young fairy godmother, played superbly by Kimberley Blake, who instantly captivated the young girls in the audience with her stunning dress. Then one by one we were introduced to the characters, next up was the main girl herself, Cinderella aka Hannah Grace Lawson, singing a funny song about Nottingham. Soon after we were soaked by Buttons and Sooty, who both initiated the expected audience participation. Next up were the step sisters played hilariously by Les Dennis and Connor McIntyre, their on stage blunders and mishaps added to the fun. We then were introduced to Prince Charming (Gareth Gates) and Dandini (Jack McNeill – regular panto goers will recognise him from last years Peter Pan). What Gareth lacked in acting skills he made up for with his incredible voice.
The songs were all catchy, localised and comical; they got everyone dancing. There has to be a special mention for the pyrotechnics and special effects, which added so much magic and awe to the show, I was completely puzzled by some of the dazzling on stage feats!
The highlight for me was Sweep’s Pavarotti impression, although it did leave some of the little ones covering their ears!!
