Theatre Review: Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical

Fisherman’s Friends The Musical

Nottingham Theatre Royal appreciative audience were enthralled last night by the well known story and shanty’s of the ‘Fisherman’s Friends’.

The staging of the musical by Lucy Osborne worked really well , dockside at Port Issac , by the Golden Lion pub, where we find a group of Cornish fisher folk enjoying both their work and their free time.

The patriarch and matriarch of the family Jago (Robet Duncan) and Maggie (Susan Penhaligaon) their presence and performance added to the authentic air of the musical . It’s a community ‘village by the sea’ where life although hard is good and enjoyed to the full.

Some really talented musicians and some sublime shanty voices especially Pete Gallagher as Wiggy and the beautiful voice of Parisa Shahmir, when she sung ‘Keep Hauling’ it was really quite moving, the lighting and use of stage and chorus helping get the atmosphere just right.

Shanty’s are normally sung a cappella, some were last night but we also had the treat of a band who were part and parcel of the cast , not tucked away.

Fisherman’s Friends the Musical got a deserved standing ovation last night , it was feel good and fun but also respectful of Cornish traditions and values.
