Theatre Review: Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty

Bourne’s 10th anniversary show remains fresh and relevant, with its 2023 show. The Christmas decorations may have been locked away for another year, but Matthew Bourne’s, Sleeping Beauty hit back with all the trimmings and magic of the season with this detailed show of fairies and magic. Stunning sets lavished the sold out theatre, promising fairy-tale silver birch forests, full moons and Tim burton-esque ballrooms, brought up to date with spattering’s of nightclubs and vampires.

A poor Princess Aurora, played by (Ashley Shaw) is pushed and pulled through this classic tale and is exhausting to watch as the dark eyed balletic dancers spin a yarn enthusiastically and energetically around the stage. Comedic moments being you temporarily back in the room, only to be dragged back into disbelief as faeries dance out from moonlit forests and a perfectly animated baby Aurora climbs the walls. A perfectly balanced adaptation of a story you thought you knew well.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty is showing at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal, however, unsurprisingly it is sold out. Look out for more upcoming shows by visiting their website here www.trch.co.uk
