Theatre Review: NPO

It was a delight to go to ‘A Night at The Oscars’ , Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra were on great form and Ken Bruce’s wit was too, ( what a loss to Radio 2).

It was billed as a family concert, and the full house thoroughly enjoyed the joyous ‘children’s’ Oscar wins such as ‘Frozen’, ‘Little mermaid’ and ‘Mary Poppins’.

John Williams the prolific film score composer with 46 Oscar nominations ‘Star Wars’ theme music got us off to a rousing start conducted by Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra’s own Mark Heron.

The older couple sitting next to me were really moved by ‘Moon River’ from the film ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ as it had been their wedding song, the lights were dimmed, the back screen displayed quite naturally, a river with appropriate moon shot.  Atmospheric, romantic.

There were two highlights for me on Saturday the sing along with a stand in Julie Andrews teaching us to sing, it was really exceptional how she got the whole audience participating.  The encore tune was ‘Colonel Bogeys March’ from ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ which we were encouraged us to whistle along to.

It was a memorable evening, thank you to Concert Hall plus all those that entertained us so well on Saturday. Next year is Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra’s 50 year anniversary and a family concert is planned again.
