Theatre Review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Theatre Royal stage last night was transformed into the Best Marigold Hotel, the set and costume were Exotic, Colin Richmond did an amazing job.

The award winning well known British film (2011) was an amazing success, did this production live up to the film’s very high standard?  Almost an impossible task, some aspects were outstanding such as the set and definitely the music and authentic sounds composed by Kuljit Bhamra, others not quite so.

Staying with the music, one of the last scenes a solo lamenting performance, which was extremely memorable and moving, the southern Indian cultural parts and when the cast spoke in Hindi was particularly enjoyable.

For me the performance of Reka John-Cheriyan as Mrs Kapoor was really pleasing to watch, I often felt she was breaking to fourth wall with great success.

The script was sometimes a bit at odds with itself, the characters were just saying words not actually performing or living the part.   ‘Zoom’ was mentioned was this to update the script, the humour however hadn’t been updated; some of the lines were just not funny.

We were trying to add up the combined ages of the ‘guests’ including Paul Nicholas (78) Hayley Mills (76) all our lovely aged cast did well , but the performance of  Marlene Sidaway (86) was the most genuine  performance of the night, she was having a whale of a time.

An enjoyable night out, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel runs until the 11th February at Nottingham theatre Royal. For tickets please visit www.trch.co.uk
