Tanya Raybould heads down to the Market Square to check out the offerings at this year’s Winter Wonderland.
Sleigh bells ring are ya listening….Ah, don’t you just love the festive season. Christmas trees, baubles, presents and of course food, and usually lots of it! But before we stuff ourselves on turkey there is one event in Nottingham for the foodie that’s not to be missed. The Winter Wonderland around the Market Square.
It seems like only five minutes since we were sampling the delights of the Nottingham Riviera yet here we are a few months down the line counting down the days to Christmas at this years “Old England” themed event. Whether it’s for a little self-indulgence or a gift for the foodie in your life then there’s lots to choose from within this years expanded market which boasts more bespoke trader cabins than ever before from which to taste the magical delights of the season.
We couldn’t resist a visit to the truly unique Helter Skelter Bar in Long Row where you can warm your cockles with a Baileys Hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and a flake or a festive Mulled wine with a slice of lemon.
A wooden decked walkway leads you around the entire Market Square where for the sweet toothed foodie the choices are endless. There are delicious Fudges from ‘Tom Fudge’ to take home, iced cookies, marshmallows, snow cakes or if fancy some of the sweet stuff to eat there and then you can tuck into donuts, pancakes, traditional Proffertjes or even chocolate dipped fruit. If savoury is your thing then visit the Victorian Grill House for a choice of sausages including Lincolnshire or hot and spicy. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire? Well almost, you can enjoy hot chestnuts or burgers or why not take home something for the cheese lover from the Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese cabin.
This year also sees the return of the ice rink within which sits the Christmas tree, but if skating is too energetic (or downright scary) for you then you can enjoy a drink at the winter bar which has a covered seating area overlooking the action.
With food like this….you’ll wish it could be Christmas every day!
The Winter Wonderland runs until Sunday 5th January 2014 (closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day)
